Eureka! I’ve Struck Freelancing Fool’s Gold
Well, maybe I’ve struck some quasi-precious metal. It remains to be seen whether all that’s promised as glitter is gold, but Pre-Press Company and I have come to a tentative deal. I had to settle for seventy-five cents on the dollar, but that’s far better than most collective efforts go. I figured the time wasted in pursuing the matter any further was worth more than the final twenty-five percent, so I caved. After all, I’d already talked them up from an initial fifty-percent offer and then a second sixty-five-percent offer.
It was so easy too. I simply said, “…I think seventy-five would be fairer” and my demand was instantly met. Of course, it went to my advantage that my co-negotiator started off the conversation with something along the lines of “Let’s see if we can come up with something agreeable to the both of us so we can just make this (you) go away already.” Ah, there’s something to be said for making yourself into the albatross around the neck.
In any event, I felt it was important to clear the air about Pre-Press Company. If I’m going to out them as problematic, I owe them a cursory nod when they eventually come through. That said, pending receipt and bank clearance of their check, Pre-Press Company, Inc. ultimately made three-quarters good on my invoices. As of right now, it’s down to a semi-Screw You! to Pre-Press Company. I’ll keep you all posted on the payment status.

I read your "Screw You" reports weekly and have been following this one with particular interest. Congratulations!!
I fortunately never had to deal with this kind of situation when I was freelanceing. Well, almost never. These guys sound like a right bunch of clowns.
"Ah, there’s something to be said for making yourself into the albatross around the neck."
Ha! That's great.
Amen! It amazes me how they pull out the idle threats and the angry responses - legitimate publishing houses/editors/employers would never stoop that low. They'd simply pass the problem on to legal and get back to work.
Hooray for you! You got compensation! It's probably much more than anyone else would have received. Way to go, girl!
I wouldn't give them too much credit, either. If you hadn't shown moxie and more smarts, they would have ignored you completely. You had them scared, girl!
Well Lori, I may have shown moxie (something I'm rarely short of), but I'm still waiting for part of my payment 45 days after it was promised. On the plus side, I was paid for my first invoice in full. Where the rest of the money is, God only knows. I had promised them if they paid me the agreed upon amount I would refrain from saying anything further about them. I think I've just about reached my own self-imposed statute of limitation. Hoping to get back to regular posts here shortly, probably with Pre-Press Company once again fueling me.
Any new news? When did you post that comment above? I'd love to hear whether you ever got that long-overdue payment!
Hi Katharine, my previous message was posted late last week. So no, I have NOT yet received all the money I was promised. I am going to give it until the end of the month then all bets are off.
Amen! Now, let's see if the check clears....
