Freelance Quote of the Day—John Irving

If you don't feel that you are possibly on the edge of humiliating yourself, of losing control of the whole thing, then probably what you are doing isn't very vital. If you don't feel like you are writing somewhat over your head, why do it? If you don't have some doubt of your authority to tell this story, then you are not trying to tell enough. ~ John Irving
Thank you, John Irving, for pointing out the vitality in my Screw You! endeavors. I don’t think a day goes by when I don’t question whether I’m humiliating myself with my outspoken sarcasm, but quite frankly, I typically don’t care. On a near-daily basis, I’m also on the verge of losing control of the whole thing with at least one individual. It’s nice to know that all that lack of self-control is not for wont.
Although I’ve never read your work, John Irving, I sense a kindred spirit in you. A Prayer for Owen Meany has just moved itself to the top of my massive “to be read” pile. I’d be willing to bet you’ve flipped off a client or two in your day. Good on you! After all, we forthright writerly types need to stick together for the betterment of the profession.

Good one.
If I was the kind of guy who put quotations on refrigerators and had a fridge big enough for that one, the printer would be spitting out a copy right this moment.

If you want to read one of Irving's best, I'd start with either The World According to Garp or A Widow for One Year. Both are excellent.
But A Prayer For Owen Meany is still a very good read.
Well, since Owen Meany is already on my shelf, I'll probably start there, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for other Irving titles. I have, however, heard his most recent is a dud.
Great quote :) There are many times I feel like I'm on the verge of humiliation, haha.
For God's sake just go to bed early on a Friday night with a case of white wine and a copy of Cider House Rules...and don't get up until you've finished. Then you'll know what all the fuss is about - the guy gets inside your brain and presses all of the buttons...he is the greatest living American author...on your shelves and in your head, he is sine qua non....
My favourite is undoubtedly A Prayer for Owen Meany, but don't go there first...let the style and the humour and the soul in easy...once there, he will become a lifelong companion.
