The Ultimate Get-a-Clue Freelance Request for the Week of May 19, 2008

I do a lot of bad-mouthing of Elance here at Screw You! but that's only because it's the only freelance-bidding site I've spent any significant amount of time exploring. The rest of its kind are just as bad, if not worse, as evidenced by this project that was recently posted on oDesk. Special thanks go out to Scott for bringing this one to my attention.

Project Description: Technical Writer Needed ASAP!
Specific Project Request: Hi, I am going to attach a document that needs to be finished by 8am Central Standard Time tomorrow. I will not be around as it will be my time to sleep, so if any of you brave workers want an easy chance at $20, then read on!

I am attaching a White paper document that has a lot of informal writing involved with it. I need a techinal writer to go in and make the writing like a Technical Whitepaper should be. You are just editing while keeping the layout and formatting the same.

If you want to take on this project, then you need to submit it to me by 8am. The best revision will be given $20.

When I wake up at 8am, I will go over your documents in the next few hours and pay that person accordingly.

I will not be available to answer questions, so please download the white paper and get started! Thank you and I hope you take advantage in this opportunity for $20 and some great feedback!

NOTE: File is too big to attach, so please download from my server:"

This yo-yo (who is in the United States, by the way) wants someone to stay awake while he sleeps to edit a technical white paper that is so large it cannot even be attached to the project request. And of course he wants someone to "take advantage of this opportunity for a (staggering) $20." Oh, and let's not forget he wants you to perform the task on spec, for which he'll only pay you that $20 if yours is the best edit he receives. Yeah, Screw him AND anyone who actually took him up on this offer!

Further proof that most of humanity is, give or take, stupid.

Sigh.

Anyone who's dumb enough to do a job like that deserves to get screwed.

So apparently you're supposed to know what technical white papers are supposed to look like (lots of passive voice and gratuitous Big Words? a lack of profanity?), without ANY feedback from this dimwit. Sure hope he believes in miracles...

Hi Kathy and Fellow "Screw You" Readers - We at oDesk don't like listings like this one either. It's already been removed. While we're always working on ways to weed out low quality buyers, sometimes bad postings get through. That said, don't let this bad apple spoil the bunch and please don't throw us under the bus with other services you may have used.

1. There are thousands of *time-based* jobs currently open on the site. The average job value is ~$4,000 (an order of magnitude greater than what you find on project bidding sites). Many of these jobs are much more valuable and will turn into long-term relationships through oDesk. Also, keep in mind that oDesk guarantees payment for these opportunities and we don't charge subscription or application fees.

2. Try our Advanced Search filters if you want to narrow your searches just to buyers with high feedback and past oDesk track records.

3. If you happen to see a listing that violates our terms of use, please use the "flag as inappropriate" link on the job listing page and we'll investigate.

Thanks.
